The Lord seldom speaks simply to satisfy our curiosity. Rather His word comes as marching orders to the committed. According to Hannah Whitall Smith, “The way in which the Holy Spirit, therefore, usually works, in a fully obedient soul, in regard to this direct guidance, is to impress upon the mind a wish or desire to do or to leave undone certain things.”2 We see an example of this in Acts 13.
“While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’ So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.”
— Acts 13:2-3 (NIV)
