On the night before Jesus was crucified Luke says, “After taking the cup, he gave thanks…” (Luke 22:17). Think about what that cup represents—His shed blood, his suffering and death—and yet He gave thanks. In Gethsemane He sweat blood as He pleaded for the Father to take that cup away but here, He gives thanks. In Gethsemane He looked into that cup and was repulsed but here He gives thanks. He could give thanks because as foul as that cup was, He knew it was the only way to redeem lost humanity.
“…who for the joy set before him endured the cross…”
— Hebrews 12:2 (NIV 1978)
Lord Jesus, You gave thanks when You took the cup and we give thanks for so great a salvation. Amen.
