The second leadership lesson from Moses is never assume. His first attempt to deliver the Israelites from Egyptian bondage was an unmitigated failure. Why? There may be any number of reasons, but one major reason was that he did not prepare the people. He simply assumed “…that his own people would realize that God was using him to rescue them, but they did not.” Instead, they said, “Who made you ruler and judge over us” (Acts 7:27)? As a result, the Israelites spent an additional forty years in slavery.

“It is not good to have zeal without knowledge, nor to be hasty and miss the way.”

— Proverbs 19:2 (NIV 1984)

Lord, help us never to make decisions based on misguided assumptions. Amen.
