Only once did Jesus think of Himself during the excruciating hours He spent on the cross and only after the work of salvation was finished (see John 19:28). It had been at least eighteen hours since He had taken any liquids. By that time His abused body was terribly dehydrated, and His tongue was stiff as a stick. When He spoke, His words were hardly more than a strangled whisper. “I thirst,” he cried (John 19:28). The religious leaders standing nearby ignored his plea but the soldiers overseeing His crucifixion immediately soaked a sponge in cheap wine and offered it to Him. Makes me wonder what I would have done. What about you?
“Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.”
— Philippians 2:4 (NLT)
Lord Jesus help us to be as selfless as You are, thinking of others before ourselves. Amen.
