At the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me’” (Matthew 27:46). In that moment Jesus was suffering the ultimate punishment for sin—separation from God. He did not receive an answer. But if we were to ask Father God why He forsook His own son I believe He would answer us. He would say, “I did it for you. I punished Him for your sins so I could forgive you. I rejected Him so I could reconcile you unto myself.”

“While we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son.”

— Romans 5:10

Lord Jesus, we thank you for suffering and dying as punishment for our sins so that we might be forgiven and reconciled to God. Amen.
