In his book Evangelism in the Early Church, Michael Green highlights three factors central to the church’s explosive success in her first four centuries:
1) The church’s ability to engage in persuasive apologetics and outthink her critics.
2) The transformed character and biblical compassion of believers.
3) The manifest power of the Spirit through healings, demonic deliverance, and prophetic ability.
That’s the church’s birthright, and the contemporary church must always be on guard lest she exchange her spiritual heritage for clever techniques.
“Watch out for the Esau syndrome: trading away God’s lifelong gift in order to satisfy a short-term appetite. You well know how Esau later regretted that impulsive—but by then it was too late, tears or no tears.”
— Hebrews 12:16–17 (MSG)
Lord Jesus help us to guard our spiritual birthright. Amen.
