It’s a terrible thing to realize you are not the godly person others think you are. Even worse to realize you are not the godly person you thought you were. That’s what happened to David. He could never have imagined himself capable of adultery and murder, not in his wildest imaginings. Then he seduced Bathsheba and arranged for her husband’s death, setting in motion a series of tragic events that would haunt him the rest of his life.
So how could David—a man after God’s own heart—do such a thing? Maybe a more important question is “How can we make sure we don’t fall prey to something similar?”
“Don’t be so naive and self-confident. You’re not exempt. You could fall flat on your face as easily as anyone else. Forget about self-confidence; it’s useless. Cultivate God-confidence.”
— 1 Corinthians 10:12 (MSG)
Lord Jesus, guard my heart lest I succumb to temptation and do something I will regret the rest of my life. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
