Behind Albrecht Durer’s famous etching, “Praying Hands,” is the story of two friends. They were very poor and had to work to support themselves, training as artists in their spare time.

“In desperation, they cast lots to decide which of them should continue working to support the other in art school. Durer won the toss, so he went off to train with famous artists and eventually he became a successful artist. Now he could send Fanz to art school. But to his horror, he discovered that the manual work had ruined Franz’s hands forever. He had forfeited his own artistic future out of loyalty to his friend.

“One day,Durer found Franz on his knees, his hands clasped in prayer, gnarled and yet offered to God in loving sacrifice. Hurriedly, he sketched the moment and produced his famous etching, “Praying Hands.”

Lord Jesus, help me be willing to sacrifice my goals to help my friend accomplish his. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
