The measure of Jonathan’s commitment to David was his willingness to give up the throne that was rightfully his. The measure of David’s commitment to Jonathan was his refusal to do anything to make the throne his own. They were both selfless in their love each for the other, and thus their friendship has become the standard by which all friendships are judged.

“Jonathan made David swear to [their covenant of friendship] again, this time by his love for him, for he loved him as much as he loved himself.”

— 1 Samuel 20:17 (TLB)

Lord Jesus, I started to pray, “Give me a friend like Jonathan,” but instead I pray, “Make me a friend like Jonathan.” In your holy name I pray. Amen.
