Is your brook drying up? Have the ravens stopped delivering? Of course, I’m speaking metaphorically of those times when God’s promised provision fails to materialize. My remarks are based on the story of Elijah the prophet. According to the word of the Lord, “The ravens brought him bread and meat morning and evening, and he drank from the brook” (1 Kings 17:6). Then the brook dried up!

So, what happened? Did God’s promises fail? Did Elijah displease the Lord in some way? Is the bone-dry brook God’s punishment? No! A thousand times no! God had another plan.

“Then the word of the LORD came to him: ‘Go at once to Zarephath… I have directed a widow there to supply you with food.’”

— 1 Kings 17:8-10 (NIV)

Lord Jesus, help us to obey if when Your direction seems to make no sense. Amen.
