All of us have things in our past that we are ashamed of. “Things,” that according to Paul Tournier, “we should like to blot out, things for which we feel ourselves responsible.” Yet our only hope, our only path to freedom, is not in denying our past, shameful though it may be, but in honest confession. Although it is potentially a frightening experience, it is also liberating. Freed from the need to pretend to be someone we are not, we can finally be our real selves.

“Therefore confess your sins to each other
and pray for each other so that you may be healed.”

— James 5:16

Lord Jesus, give us the courage to own our past and in this owning up, let us find forgiveness and freedom. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
