When Jonathan gave David his weapons—his sword, his bow, and his belt—he made himself vulnerable. He was at David’s mercy. So it is in true friendships. When we share our deepest self with our friend, we are giving him the weapons to destroy us. It is the ultimate act of trust, and it is what distinguishes all truly great friendships.

“A man of many companions may come too ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.”

— Proverbs 18:24 (NIV 1984)

Lord Jesus, keep my heart pure. May I guard the secrets entrusted to me and may I never betray a friend. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
