The person who believes that God loves him, as he is, with all of his “hangups,” believes the unbelievable. It’s too good to be true. Yet that is the heart and soul of the gospel: “…Christ died for the ungodly” (Romans 5:6). This literally means that you and I are the objects of God’s love but not the cause of it. God loves us, not because we are lovable, but because that is the kind of God He is. His love is based on who He is, not who we are.

“God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

— Romans 5:8 (NIV 1984)

Lord Jesus, we are overwhelmed by Your love. We don’t have to earn it. You freely give it to us. Thank You. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
