No one can be absolutely certain that he serves God with truly pure motives. Nonetheless, there are some questions we can ask ourselves that will help us examine our motives. None is more pointed than the question that asks: “Would I continue to do what I am doing if nobody saw and nobody knew? That is, would I do what I’m doing if there were no earthly reward for me?
“Don’t push your way to the front; don’t sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don’t be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand.”
