When Salieri realized that he would never be as gifted as the roguish Mozart no matter how hard he prayed, he felt betrayed by God. In a graphic scene depicting his apostasy he takes the crucifix from the wall of his room and places it in the fire. That’s the danger every one of us will face should we try to manipulate God in order to advance ourselves.
