Let’s return for a moment to Jacob, alone on the muddy bank of the Jabbok. If he wants a blessing he is going to have to admit that he is a liar and a deceiver. That’s what his name means. Likewise, before the Lord can bless us we have to come clean with Him—we have to “name” ourselves, never an easy thing to do.

“So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak…Then the man said, ‘Let me go…’ But Jacob replied, ‘I will not let you go unless you bless me.’ The man asked him, ‘What is your name?’ ‘Jacob,’ he answered.”

–Genesis 32:24-27 (NIV)

Lord Jesus, help us to realize that You already know the worst about us. We can’t fool You so it’s foolish to try. Hear our confession and bless us we pray. Amen.
