Marathoners talk of “breaking through the wall.” They run until they are on the verge of collapsing. By sheer determination they press on, and suddenly they are through the wall. They get their second wind, but it’s more than that. They experience an almost euphoric feeling, a runner’s high. That experience corresponds with those moments in our devotional life when we are literally overwhelmed with the presence of God. It does not happen every time we pray or read the Scriptures, but when it does, it makes everything – all the discipline, all the solitude and sacrifice, all the hours of waiting – worthwhile.
“But those who wait on the Lord
— Isaiah 40:31 (NKJV)
Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint.”
Lord teach us press through until we are overwhelmed with Your presence. Amen.
