There’s nothing in Elisha history to indicate that he had any plans of becoming a prophet. His father was a wealthy farmer and he was in line to inherit it all but his encounter with Elijah changed everything. He left his father and mother. He killed his oxen and burned his plow lest he be tempted to turn back. He may not have realized what he was getting into but Elijah did and that’s why he said, “Go back. What have I done to you” (1 Kings 19:20)? But for Elisha there was no going back.
“Jesus replied, ‘No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.’”
— Luke 9:62 (NIV)
Lord Jesus, help us to realize that following You is an all or nothing proposition. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
