In the heat of temptation, we think only of ourselves, only of the moment. The deceiver tells us to take control of our lives, to do it our way. He tells us to consider only ourselves, regardless of the consequences our actions may have. Once we buy into his way of thinking, there is almost no sinful choice that we cannot justify. Our “needs” take precedence over everything else – marriage vows, children, even God’s law.
“God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed.”
— James 1:13-14
Lord Jesus, save us from our selfish selves; deliver us from our preoccupation with self lest we fall into temptation and sin. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
