On September 28, 1789 the first Federal Congress passed a resolution asking the President of the United States to recommend to the nation a day of thanksgiving. A few days later, President George Washington issued a proclamation naming Thursday, November 26, 1789 as a “Day of Public Thanksgiving.” Citizens of these United States have been celebrating a day of public thanksgiving each year for the past 231 years. For many Thanksgiving is simply a time of feasting with family and friends, but it is more than that, much more. It is a time to thank the Lord for His many blessings.
“Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father…”
— James 1:17 (NLT)
Lord Jesus, we pause in our mad rush of living to give you thanks. We thank you for our salvation, our family, our friends and for Your faithful provision. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
