1 Samuel 18:4 says, “Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, and even his sword, his bow and his belt.”
When Jonathan gave David his weapons—his sword, his bow, and his belt—he made himself vulnerable. He was at David’s mercy. He had no way to defend himself. So, it is in a true friendship. When we share our deepest self with our friend, we are giving him weapons he can use to destroy us. It is the ultimate act of trust, and it is what distinguishes the truly great friendships from those that are just average.
“…someone of integrity won’t violate a confidence.”

Lord Jesus, make me the kind of friend who is always loyal. Amen.
