Although I possess a reasonably healthy self-esteem, as a young man I felt the need to prove my significance. It wore many faces—the egomaniac who talked too much; the proud presumptuous me; the pseudo-spiritual me; and the critical, cutting me. It was my way of shouting to the world, “Look at me. Notice me. Make me feel important.” Such behavior often alienated the very people whose affirmation I craved. Even if I experienced a significant achievement the accompanying sense of well-being was fleeting. There simply was never enough success to still the troubling voices within. Only Jesus can heal our self-doubts.

“For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.”

— Hebrews 10:14 (NIV)

Lord help us to realize we do not have to strive for significance for You have made us perfect. Amen.
