Although being criticized is never pleasant it can be productive. First make it a matter of prayer. There is often an element of truth in even the most malicious criticism so ask God if there is anything He is trying to tell you through this criticism. Secondly consider the source. Although God can use anyone to correct us, He generally speaks through trustworthy people. Therefore, I give considerably more weight to criticism when it comes from a peer or a mature believer. Finally, ask the Lord to help you remember that He loves the person who may have unjustly criticized you as much as He loves you.
“Whoever disregards discipline comes to poverty and shame,
— Proverbs 18:18
but whoever heeds correction is honored.”
Lord, help us to accept correction. Amen.
