Nearly everyone struggles with self-doubt to some degree, even those we consider spiritual giants. Take Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the German theologian and martyr, for instance. He was executed one week before the end of World War II after having spent months in prison. During his imprisonment he appeared to be the epitome of a man at peace with himself and God. Yet beneath his confident exterior he struggled with the same self-doubts that tempt us all. One of his prison prayers titled, “Who Am I?” gives us a glimpse of his inner struggle. He writes, “Who am I? They mock me, these lonely questions of mine. Whoever I am, Thou knowest, O God, I am Thine.” That’s the secret isn’t it. Not who we are, but whose we are.
“Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God.”
— 1 John 3:1 (NKJV)
Lord help us to realize we are persons of significance because we are children of God. Amen.
