xSpencer Marsh begins his book “God, Man and Archie Bunker” with these words: “In the beginning Archie created God in his own image, in his own image created he him.” Upon first reading I found his statement clever and attention grabbing. Upon further reflection I find it both profound and prophetic—an apt description of our postmodern culture with its freewheeling spirituality. What many believe about God is based on personal “spiritual” experiences (think whims) rather than on the revelation of Scripture.
What about you? Is your understanding of God shaped and grounded by Scripture or by personal “spiritual” experiences?
“Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons.”
— 1 Timothy 4:1 (NLT)
Lord Jesus, help us to be faithful students of the Word lest we be led astray by the clever teachings of those who follow deceptive spirits. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
