Little is known about Barabbas, the insurrectionist and murderer Governor Pilate freed instead of Jesus. In truth, his anonymity suits him well, for he represents every member of our fallen race. In the truest sense, the cross upon which Jesus died was intended for each of us. Our sins fashioned that cross and it was there we should have died. But God had a better plan: “[Christ] himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness” (1 Peter 2:24). Let us therefore
“…confess with [our] mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in [our] heart that God raised him from the dead, [and we] will be saved.”
— Romans 10:9 (NIV)
Lord Jesus, hear our confession and save us. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
