God is both infinite and intimate. He told Moses, “I am who I am” (Exodus 3:14). There was no other way He could describe Himself. He was unlike all others. He was before all things and beyond all things. There was nothing like Him, nothing to which He could compare Himself. He is all powerful, all knowing, and everywhere present. He is incomprehensible, beyond imagining, unknowable. Yet He is also intimate—“the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob” (Exodus 3:15). The God who is infinite—unknowable—chooses to make himself intimate. He chooses to be known as “our” God and the God of “our” fathers.
“In the beginning was the Word…and the Word was God. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.”
— John 1:1 and 14 (NIV)
Father God, thank You for making Yourself known to us. Amen.
