The ultimate purpose of friendship is not accountability but nurture. True friends are committed to protecting each other, to be sure. You must protect me from myself even as I must protect you from yourself. Yet, if that becomes the primary function of the relationship our friendship will not long survive. The bread which nourishes our soul is acceptance and communication, not accountability. Heed the counsel of the wise man who wrote:
The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life.
Proverbs 10:11 (NIV 1984)
The lips of the righteous nourish many.
Proverbs 10:21 (NIV 1984)
The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom.
Proverbs 10:31 (NIV 1984)
The tongue of the wise brings healing,
Proverbs 12:18 (NIV 1984)
Truthful lips endure forever.
Proverbs 12:19 (NIV 1984)
“He who guards his lips guards his life.”
— Proverbs 13:3 (NIV 1984)
Lord help us to nourishes our relationships with life giving words. Amen.
