I remember a scene from “Amos ‘n Andy” that illustrates the danger of bitterness. There was a big man who was always slapping Andy on the chest. Finally, Andy had had enough, and he told Amos, “I’m gonna fix him. I’ve put a stick of dynamite in my vest pocket and the next time he slaps me, he’s gonna get his hand blown off!” Unfortunately, Andy failed to consider one relevant fact. While the dynamite was blowing that man’s hand off, it would also be blowing a hole in his own heart.
The dynamite of bitterness may indeed hurt the person against whom it is directed, but only at a terrible cost to the one who is bitter.
“Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many.”
— Hebrews 12:15
Lord purge us of all bitterness lest it destroy us. Amen.
