Since there is often an element of truth in even the most malicious criticism, we should make every criticism a matter of prayer. Although God can use anyone to correct us, He generally speaks through trustworthy people. Therefore, give more weight to criticism when it comes from a mature believer. Even the most sincere person is capable of interjecting his personal feelings into a situation; therefore, be careful not to accept every criticism at face value. With God’s help, make the corrections that are required when the criticism is valid. It is seldom easy to admit that we are wrong, especially if it means reversing a decision or changing a public policy, but it is mandatory.
“Rebuke the wise and they will love you.
— Proverbs 9:8–9 (NIV)
Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still.”
Lord, our need to be right makes it hard for us to accept criticism. Forgive us and change us. Amen.
