The second thing my father taught me was to love people and use things. Love, according to my father, is a verb—an action word—not a noun. Love is what you do not just what you say. It’s inviting a transient family who are down on their luck to have supper at your house. And if they are planning on sleeping in their beat-up old car ask them to spend the night. Let them sleep in the boy’s room. The boys can sleep on the on the floor for one night. It won’t hurt them. I know I was one of the boys who gave up my bed.

“Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.”

— 1 John 3:18 (NIV)

Lord help us to roll up our sleeves and get our hands dirty helping others. Amen.
