Paul was a man who had few of the amenities that most of us consider necessary for our happiness. He had no home, no wife or family. His only earthly possessions were a cloak and some parchments. He was misunderstood and hated by his own countrymen, separated from his friends and in poor health—yet he was content. Not with the superficial happiness that often is mistaken for joy, but real, honest-to-goodness contentment, which is at least one part sorrow for every two parts joy.
“Rejoice in the Lord always… And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
— Philippians 4:4 and 7 (NIV)
Lord Jesus, help us to rejoice even when our hearts are breaking. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
