There are undoubtedly several reasons the Lord delays His answers to our prayers. The first one that comes to mind is to weed out our trite and insincere petitions. Consider the parable of the friend at midnight in Luke 11 and the persistent widow in Luke 18. Both parables suggest that if our requests aren’t important enough to be prayed about more than once, if we can’t remember them from one prayer time to the next, then they probably aren’t important enough to merit an answer.
“One day Jesus told his disciples a story to show that they should always pray and never give up.”
–Luke 18:1 (NLT)
Jesus, help me discern between trite prayers that need to be abandoned and difficult petitions that need to be pursued with unrelenting determination. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
