Have you suffered hurts and disappointments so painful that you can’t bear to remember them? If that’s the case, you may have tried to repress them. Unfortunately, that which we repress is beyond the reach of God’s grace, and thus it lives on to torment us and to undermine our relationships. It’s only as we “own” our past and bring it to God in honest confession that His grace can truly make us new. That’s what Jesus did for the woman at the well. He confronted her with her past in order to transform her.

“Jesus said, ‘You’re right! You don’t have a husband— for you have had five husbands, and you aren’t even married to the man you’re living with now.'”

— John 4:17-18 (NLT)

Lord Jesus, give us the courage to own our past so You can set us free. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
