Jesus came to the cross as “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). He came as the Sinless One to suffer for sinful humanity, as the Righteous One to suffer for the unrighteous. But once the Roman soldiers nailed Him to the cross, a strange and terrible metamorphosis took place. The Lamb of God became a serpent (John 3:14) the Sinless One became sin itself (2 Corinthians 5:21) and God discharged on Him the full weight of His righteous judgment.
“God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
— 2 Corinthians 5:21
Lord Jesus, may we never forget that You suffered judgment at God’s hand that we might live. May we never forget that You suffered the shame of the cross to deliver us from the shame of our sin. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
