The greatest defense against temptation is the Word of God and prayer. Ignore either one of these spiritual disciplines and you are tempting fate. On the night Jesus was betrayed He counseled his disciples to, “Watch and pray” (Mt. 26:41) lest they fall into temptation. Because they did not heed His admonition, they succumbed to temptation. Peter denied him three times and the other disciples all forsook Him and fled. Knowing how important prayer is in spiritual warfare Jesus teaches us to pray, “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one” (Mt. 6:13).

Lord Jesus, strengthen us in the hour of temptation and deliver us from the evil one. Amen.
