A popular theology in our materialistic culture encourages believers to ask the Lord for wealth. While it is popular it is not necessarily scriptural. Consider the words of Jesus recorded in Matthew 6: “’Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear…. For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them” (Matthew 6:25, 32). The pagans run after materialism, but the Father tells us not to concern ourselves because He will take care of us.
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
— Matthew 6:33
Lord, forgive our inordinate fixation on material things. Teach us to seek only Your Kingdom. Amen.
