If you want to understand what it means to be a true friend study the friendship Jonathan and David shared. They each preferred the other above themselves. The measure of Jonathan’s commitment to David was his willingness to give up the throne that was rightfully his. The measure of David’s commitment to Jonathan was his adamant refusal to do anything to make the throne his own. They were each willing to lay down their life for the other.

Lord Jesus, thank you for those friends who seek my good above their own and who celebrate my small successes as if they were their own. Make me a friend like that. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
