At the heart of every temptation is the desire to become God at least as far as our life is concerned. We may call it by any number of names—individualism, self-determination, uniqueness, ambition, but at its core it is the same old obsession. Every one of us wants to be God. We all want to be in control. We want to make the rules, we want to decide what is best for us. We don’t want anyone telling us what to do or how to live our lives. It is the ultimate temptation, and it comes from within rather than without. Satan may fan the flames, but the embers of sinful egotism reside in our own hearts.
“Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away.”
— James 1:14 (NLT)
Lord, deliver us from the evil within our own hearts. Amen.
