When sincere believers succumb to temptation it is usually the culmination of a series of seemingly innocent choices. For instance Peter’s denial of Jesus was the final act in a seven-part drama that began with overconfidence and ended with bitter regret. These seven stages are not unique to Peter. They can be found, in one form or another, in almost every sinful failure. By recognizing the early stages of temptation we will significantly increase our chances of escaping the tempter’s snare.
“Then they will come to their senses and escape from the devil’s trap….”
— 2 Timothy 2:26 (NLT)
Lord Jesus, I can’t believe how naïve we are, how easily we are tricked by the tempter. Bring us to our senses that we might escape the devil’s trap. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
