To be crucified with Christ means that God puts our “self-destructiveness” to death. Self is a killer. He is selfish, blindly ambitious, critical and cruel. He destroys relationships, breaks up marriages and wrecks homes. Our best intentions are undermined by our pride, by our gluttonous need for recognition and by our insatiable ambition. Left to our own devices we inevitably self-destruct. No wonder Paul writes, “For to be carnally minded is death…” (Romans 8:6 KJV).

“Offer yourselves to sin…and it’s your last free act. But offer yourselves to the ways of God and the freedom never quits.”

— Romans 6:16 (MSG)

Almighty God, break my stubborn will. Be ruthless in Your love as you deal with my carnal self. Show no mercy to the “old man.” Crucify him. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
