The sound of children’s laughter drifted in through the open window, in the distance a dog barked, and belatedly I realized that God was with us. I’m not sure where that thought came from, but suddenly it was there, full-blown, and as clear as any thought I’ve ever had. In a strange sort of way, that unfinished living room became a sanctuary, chicken and corn-on-the-cob a holy meal, and our conversation a kind of prayer.

“You prepare a feast for me
in the presence of my enemies.
You honor me by anointing my head with oil.
My cup overflows with blessings.
Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me
all the days of my life,
and I will live in the house of the LORD
forever.”

— Psalm 23:5-6 (NLT)

Lord Jesus, thank You for always being present in our lives. Amen.
