Are you walking through a dark place right now? If so you are in good company. Elijah the prophet found himself in a place so dark he prayed to die (1 Kings 19:3-5). On at least one occasion Jesus confessed that his soul was “exceeding sorrowful unto death (Matthew 26:38.” In classic devotional literature these experiences were known as the dark night of the soul. Whatever it’s called, the darkness can be debilitating, especially if it continues for any length of time. But don’t despair. God will not abandon you. He will not leave you there.

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.”

— James 1:2-3 (NIV 1984)

Lord Jesus, be nearer to us than the breath we breathe and closer than life itself, lest we lose heart. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
