Salvation by grace was completely foreign to the 16th century Roman Catholic. The idea that a person could be saved from their sins and damnation by the grace of God alone was incomprehensible. They simply could not imagine that God would bestow His unearned and undeserved favor upon them, yet that is exactly what God does! There is nothing we can do to earn God’s grace. It is completely motivated by His own character and is His merciful action toward undeserving sinners. Thus, we are saved from His righteous judgment by His unmerited and unearned favor.

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.”

— Ephesians 2:8 (NIV)

Lord Jesus, we are trusting in Your grace and grace alone. Amen.
