The “old man”—that is our carnal nature—is a killer. He is selfish, blindly ambitious, critical and cruel. He destroys relationships, breaks up marriages and wrecks homes. Our best intentions are undermined by our pride, by our gluttonous need for recognition and by our insatiable ambition. Left to our own devices we inevitably self-destruct. No wonder Paul writes, “For to be carnally minded is death…” (Romans 8:6 KJV).
How, you may be asking, can you escape the tyranny of your destructive self-will? Honestly confess those areas where greed and lust control your life. Ask Jesus to break their power for only He can. Finally,
“…count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.”
— Romans 6:11(KJV)
Almighty God, break my stubborn will. Be ruthless in Your love as you deal with my carnal self. Show no mercy to the “old man.” Crucify him. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
