When I was a young pastor, I was tempted to steal a pair of scissors. I resisted that temptation, but I felt no victory. Instead, I feared I was unfit for the ministry because I could be tempted to shoplift. Only later did I realize spiritual pride was my greatest temptation not stealing. It pains me to admit it, but my shocked embarrassment is irrefutable proof. Only a spiritually arrogant person is surprised when he is tempted, thinking himself above the kind of petty sins that tempt others.
“Don’t be so naive and self-confident. You’re not exempt. You could fall flat on your face as easily as anyone else.”
— 1 Corinthians 10:12 (MSG)
Lord forgive us when we act like the pharisee (Luke 18:10-14) who thought he was better than other people. Amen.
