Bible doctrine—especially what we believe about God—is vitally important but, as Thielicke, the great German theologian and pastor, pointed out, it can be undermined by a life characterized by “small fibs” and other compromises. Maybe this is what James had in mind when he wrote, “Isn’t it obvious that God-talk without God-acts is outrageous nonsense?” (James 2:17 MSG).

“Talk and act like a person expecting to be judged…”

— James 2:12 (MSG)

Lord Jesus, help us to be as conscientious about our behavior as we are about our theology. Empower us to live truly spiritual lives even as we strive to adhere to pure doctrine. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
