I can’t help thinking how different Ray and Patsy were from the rest of our congregation. Ours was a “yuppie” congregation and they looked like homeless people – he with his bad teeth, out of style double-knit slacks, and scuffed shoes and she in her too small Salvation Army thrift shop dresses and taped-up glasses. In spite of this they seemed unaware of the vast social chasm that separated them from the other parishioners and worshipped Jesus with a joy that was pure and simple.

“Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom?”

— James 2:5

Lord Jesus, help us to treat all people equally, rich and poor alike. May we always have room in our hearts and in our lives for the Ray and Patsy’s of this world. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
