Is there anything worse than being torn between two loyalties? I think not, especially if it means being torn between pleasing God and pleasing those whose opinion we value. The closest thing to that is the medieval practice of quartering. The victim’s ankles and wrists were hitched to four horses that galloped off in opposite directions literally tearing him limb from limb!
Our absolute allegiance belongs to Christ and Christ alone. Once that is settled, we will have the strength to do what is required of us regardless of the cost.
“No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.”
— Matthew 6:24 (NKJV)
Lord Jesus, deliver me from the seductive voices of our culture that tell me to take care of myself first. Help me to lay down my life in loving service to You and others. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
