Isaiah 53 is pregnant with pain. The prophet’s words reach out and grip our hearts. When Isaiah says Jesus was despised, we feel it. When he says Jesus was rejected, we hurt with Him. When he describes Jesus as a man of sorrows, we grieve. When he says Jesus was familiar with suffering, afflicted, pierced, wounded, and even crushed, we can hardly bear it. It would be presumptuous to think we can fully comprehend His sufferings, but we would be derelict if we didn’t try. How else can we fully appreciate what He did for us?

“He was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole.”

— Isaiah 53:5 (NLT)

Lord Jesus, help us to give our lives in loving service to You. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
